چکیده

A 132.70-m-high tower (above foundation) has been successfully completed at Tenerife Island. The foundation of the tower, a 2-mthick reinforced concrete slab, is supported by jointed, vesicular and weathered basalt, and scoria. A three-dimensional, elastic finite element program has permitted to calculate the displacements of the tower and the stresses in the slab. The installation of rod extensometers at different depths below the slab and clinometers at the lower basement has provided comparison between measured and calculated displacements, and the estimation of in situ deformation moduli. A first stage prediction (before construction) has allowed establishment of an upper limit, based upon pressuremeter modulus, and a lower limit, based upon Bieniawski’s equation [The geomechanics classification in rock engineering applications. In: Proceedings of the fourth cong. ISRM congress, Montreux, vol. 2. 1979. p. 41–48], of the settlements of the tower slab. The geometric mean of these values comes close to the measured settlement. The moduli deduced from the simple empirical equation proposed by Gokceoglu et al. [Predicting the deformation modulus of rock masses: a comparative study. Int J Rock Mech Min Sci 2003;40:701–10], and Hoek and Brown [Practical estimates of rock mass strength. Int J Rock Mech Min Sci 1997;40:701–10] as a function of GSI provide a good fit with the measured settlements in this type of rock. A good correlation is also obtained with the empirical equation presented by Verman et al. [Effect of tunnel depth on modulus of deformation of rock mass. Rock Mech Rock Eng 1997;30(3):121–7] that incorporates the influence of the confining stress in the deformation modulus. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Evaluation of Seismic Behavior of Steel Moment Resisting Frames Considering Nonlinear Soil-structure Interaction

In structural analysis, the base of structures is usually assumed to be completely rigid. However, the combination of foundation and the subsurface soil, makes in fact a flexible-base for the soil-structure system. It is well-known that the structural responses can be significantly affected by incorporating the Soil-structure Interaction (SSI) effects. The aim of the present study is to provide...

Numerical Investigation of dip angle direction of foundation Joint on nonlinear dynamic response of concrete gravity dams

The stability of a gravity dam on a jointed rock foundation might be endangered by weak joints that may be present in the fracture network of the bed rock. A review of the literature shows that there are few studies of the effect of a weak joint in the foundation rock on the stability of dams. This research uses the finite difference numerical modelling software ABAQUS to model a gravity dam, t...

Dynamic Analysis of Offshore Wind Turbine Towers with Fixed Monopile Platform Using the Transfer Matrix Method

In this paper, an analytical method for vibrations analysis of offshore wind turbine towers with fixed monopile platform is presented. For this purpose, various and the most general models including CS, DS and AF models are used for modeling of wind turbine foundation and axial force is modeled as a variable force as well. The required equations for determination of wind turbine tower response ...

Surface Morphology of Basalt Columns at Svartifoss, VatnajökulsÞjóðgarður, Southern Iceland

A spectacular example of columnar-jointed basalt occurs at Svartifoss in the Vatnajökull National Park of southern Iceland. The columns are notable for a variety of features on the vertical joint surfaces and the horizontal parting surfaces. The jointed surfaces of the columns display horizontal striations at a spacing of centimeters to decimeters. The individual striations exhibit crescentic h...

Effects of the Soil-Foundation-Structure Interaction on the Component Demand Modifier Factor of Concrete Gravity Beams based on ASCE 41-06 Standard

The aim of the present paper is to evaluate the influence of the Soil- Foundation- Structure Interaction (SFSI) effects on the component demand modifier factor of concrete gravity beams based on ASCE 41-06 standard. To this end, the beam on the nonlinear Winkler foundation approach is employed which is a simple and efficient method. At first, four sets of 3-, 6-, 10- and 15-storey concrete mome...
